About Hagi Yaki
Hagi Yaki is a traditional Japanese pottery from Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, with a history spanning over 400 years. Deeply connected to the culture of tea, it has long been cherished by tea masters for its quiet beauty and warmth.
A defining feature of Hagi Yaki is the fine crackled glaze known as kannyū. With use, tea gradually seeps into these delicate lines, subtly changing the color and character of the vessel over time. This natural transformation is called “The Seven Transformations of Hagi,” and is celebrated as an essential part of its charm.
Because Hagi Yaki is born from the harmony between clay and glaze, no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Each vessel carries its own expression, inviting the user to enjoy a unique and evolving relationship with the piece—one shaped by time, use, and care.
How to Care for Hagi Yaki
To enjoy Hagi Yaki for many years, a little extra care is recommended. Due to the nature of its clay and the fine crackled glaze (kannyū), Hagi Yaki is more porous than porcelain and should be handled gently.
Before Use
Always check for cracks or damage before use. Do not use if damaged.
Before first use, wash gently with dishwashing detergent.
During Use
Before each use, soak the vessel briefly in water to reduce absorption.
Avoid leaving acidic, oily, or alcoholic contents inside for long periods.
Microwave use (warming only) is generally acceptable, though staining may occur.
Cleaning & Storage
Hand washing is recommended. If using a dishwasher, ensure pieces do not touch.
Dry thoroughly before storage. Dish dryers may be used.
Additional Notes
The unglazed foot (kōdai) may be smoothed gently if needed.
Use a cloth or coaster on delicate surfaces.
Minor water seepage may occur and usually stops naturally. If needed, soak the dried piece in rice water or funori.
